Hip hop suffered another loss today as the New York Daily News reported that hip hop mogul Chris Lighty had passed away due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound at age 44.
Chris Lighty set up his own management company in 1989 called Violator Management and was instrumental to the careers of many including Mariah Carey, 50 Cent, LL Cool J, Busta Rhymes, Ja Rule and more.
Aside from his management success in the rap game he was also responsible for the largest brand endorsement deal in hip hop to date when he brokered the deal for 50 Cent and vitamin water which saw 50 walk away with a cool $100 million. A few hours ago 50 Cent released a statement paying tribute to his long time manager:
“I am deeply saddened by the loss of my dear friend and business partner Chris Lighty. Chris has been an important part of my business and personal growth for a decade. He was a good friend and adviser who helped me develop as an artist and businessman. My prayers are with his family. He will be greatly missed.”
